For the last six years the city of Sderot has been subject to non stopping terror attacks by the various terrorist groups in Gaza. The deadly Kassam rockets have killed, wounded, caused shock and panic as well as damage to homes and businesses in the city. The Kassam rocket attacks on Sderot are an attempt by the terrorist organizations to wage a war of attrition with Israel; their goal is to break the spirit of the residents of Sderot, destroy the people’s daily routine, and make life in the city unbearable to the point where the city will turn into a ghost town. Thus “The Committee for the Security of Sderot” was founded, in order to help strengthen the residents’ enduring spirit, and to aid and help in places of need. The Terrorists will not win and will not break the great southern spirit of Sderot.
The security situation in Sderot is not one that effects only the residents of Sderot and the surrounding arias but is first and foremost a national security problem which effects all of the citizens of Israel. The character of the Israeli people is judged by how they deal with the security threat and by the way they help and support the border residents, like the "old man" Ben Gurion said: “In the Negev will the Nation and the people of Israel be judged”. The attacks on the city of Sderot and the Western Negev are a substantial threat to, the security of the State of Israel, her sovereignty, and the characters and values we hold as a Jewish and democratic state.
We believe in the Israeli spirit which has found ways to overcome difficult and complicated problems in the past, will overcome the current crisis in Sderot and the Settlements of the aria, and from the crises will find away to rise anew and to fulfill the Zionist dream of settling and bringing life to the Negev. The Committee for the Security of Sderot was formed by residents of Sderot and the aria and its members are not connected with any political organization. The Committee talks and works simultaneously with government and non-government bodies. The preservation of the nation’s values and symbols are the fundamental principal which guides the committee in all its actions.
The Chairmen of the Committee is Alon Davidi a resident who works in education and social work in the city.
Members of the committee work on a number of fronts:
1. Improving the security situation in Sderot by lobbying decision makers in the government.
2. Providing legal counsel to those injured by the Kassam, to help them receive insurance payment that they should be receiving by law, tax benefits, and help with National Insurance.
3. Financial help to needy families.
4. Operation management of emergency teams that help residents who suffer from shellshock after kassam attacks.
5. Running fun entertainment activities in the city: on holidays, family events, and youth activities.
6. Operation of a youth committee: The youth work together with the committee.
The ongoing war of attrition over Sderot and the border settlements is a hard and tormenting war. Yet there is a way to defeat the terror but only on condition that we work together, “A man will help his shepherded by saying to his brother “Be Strong”.
