Savtot (grandmothers) and teens from Sderot took over IDF army bases in the Gaza area, and distributed `Sfingim` (Morrocan doughnuts) and candy to the soldiers.
The operation has become a tradition in the past few years, and was initiated by the Sderot Security Headquarters. They recruited the best bakers in the area- the Sderot Savtot and the teenagers who helped out.
The Savtot worked night and day to prepare the Sfingim. During the day, they were able to bake at the local home for seniors, specially prepped for the occasion by the manager, Hananya Hazan. Early in the morning they bought snacks and candy, to make the operation even sweeter. Rachel Amos was nominated `operation commander`, after making approximately 3000 sfingim!
Many teenage girls from the Amit Ulpana high school in the area, volunteered to help out. They baked, packaged, attached thank you notes from the Sderot residents and delivered the round doughnuts to the soldiers.
Out of gratitude, the soldiers who were from the `Golani` brigade, presented the girls with Golani t-shirts.
Masudi Shitrit, one of the `Savtot` tells: “ I like preparing food for the soldiers who watch over us. All my sons served in the army, and I bless them that God will protect them from harm.”
Alon Davidi, Security Headquarters Chairman tells how the sfing distribution has become a tradition: “ This is the second year in a row we are running this operation, the savtot are always happy to volunteer to make their tasty food for the soldiers. When they see the soldiers smile, they are delighted.
This shows that everyone in Sderot can contribute, whether they are young or old. That is how Sderot resident show their courage on Hannukah. This beautiful project is done with so much love and care for others, while the reality is so difficult.
The headquarters will keep in good contact with the soldiers who serve in the Gaza area, and continue these projects, together with many more.”
The Golani Soldiers were very excited to host the teens and Savtot of Sderot in their base. They brought out musical instruments, sang and had a great time. Rami, one of the soldiers told: “It is just so heartwarming to see the affection the Savtot shower down on us. Its fun to know someone is thinking of us, and wants to spoil us on Hannukah. Our heart is with Sderot.”
