It’s not the Kassams, It’s the Terrorists

An article by Alon Davidi, Chairman of The Sderot Security Headquarters, on the Israeli army’s new Kassam Interception system called” Kipat Barzel” (Iron Cap). How should Israel be dealing with the Kassam threat?

It’s really great that the Israeli Government remembers that they have an Interception system, and is willing to invest in the Sderot residents, when we are entering the 8th year of the Kassam missiles terror attacks.
This time, neither Gaidamack nor Bagatz (High Court of Justice) influenced the government to pay attention to the great distress the people of Sderot are in. It was a blessed initiation of the Ministry of Defense. This is definitely a breakthrough, even if the system is activated in two years. But in my opinion, Israel’s government does not understand that we are at war, even if the Prime Minister claims that there is a war in the south.

This is no way to handle a war. We are not at war with Kassam Missiles. The war is with the Palestinian society in Gaza, who declared Hamas as their leaders, who call out for the destruction of the State of Israel. We must fight and defeat the enemy, and make them realize that they cannot bomb a kindergarten without paying the price of a military response.
However, the state of Israel is too scared to react strongly.

After the disengagement, a foolish mistake in itself, we had expected a different outcome. We were told, “Here, Israel is making a historical move, a move that will change the face of the Middle East completely. A move that tore Israeli society apart.”
Strongly and confidently, they stated: “ One Kassam, and Gaza will go up in flames.” So they said.

They did not understand that this is a war between two societies. That the battle over land- the territories, is just an expression of a deeper conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians.
The disengagement did not stop terror, but encouraged it, and intensified it.
This is the reason I cannot be enthusiastic about the army’s new device. The government promised a brighter future after the disengagement, and as a Sderot resident, trusting the government is not exactly easy.

It seems as if the Israeli government is trying it’s hardest to ignore Sderot’s real problem: The Palestinian society, the largest terror manufacturer in the world. The Army targets Kassam launchers here and there, but doesn’t fight Hamas- who runs a trained army.
Therefore, if Olmert says there is a war in the south, its time we fought. It’s time for “Homat Magen” (Security Wall Operation) in Gaza.
