Every officer in training must undergo a day in Sderot studying the Israeli values, officer training base (Bahad 1) commander stated on the “Sderot culture and values day”. Many officers in training met with Sderot residents and visited schools, on a day trip to the city.
Alon Davidi, Committee for a Secure Sderot (CSS) chairman worked with the Chief Rabbinate of the IDF and staff at the officer’s training base to initiate this unique program. He organized meetings with Sderot residents and special activities at the local schools. IDF was pleased with this initiation, and sent the training officers to Sderot, in order for them to see from up close how the residents deal with the Kassam situation on a daily basis.
The day began with a speech by Alon Davidi, SSC chairman, who spoke about the reality in Sderot in the past few years, and the duty of Israeli society to find a real solution to the security problem.
Later on the soldiers visited a few of the local schools, ‘Torani Chadash, ‘Torani Madaai’, ‘Shikmim’ and ‘Hadar’.
Every soldier crew was assigned to a different classroom, where they ran activities with the students. The children enjoyed every minute, especially when it came to trying on the soldiers berets.
Social coordinator, Sonia Buskila, told how amazing the soldiers were: “ The soldiers fit right in, as if they were a part of the classroom. The children were delighted by their surprise visit, and enjoyed the activities very much.”
The cadets also took part in the sporting event that took place in Sderot that day, and participated in the games organized by SSC volunteers.
With a “Golani” beret on his head, Avishai, one of the ‘Torani Chadash’ students, told how his new friend, a Golani soldier will protect Sderot from the Kassam missiles.
The soldiers reported how the experience of meeting the actual people of Sderot, not just seeing them on a TV screen, was very meaningful.
The soldiers then met with Yonatan Avukasis, father of Ayala, of blessed memory, who was killed by a Kassam racket while protecting her brother.
IDF plans to continue this activity on a monthly base, so that every soldier will have a chance to visit Sderot during his service.
Bahad 1 commander said every soldier who trains to become an officer should come to Sderot, in order to understand whom he is fighting for, and the purpose of his service.
