In a few days many Israeli children will begin their summer vacation. Because of the complicated security situation the past few years in Sderot, many parents are wary of staying in the area for the summer and choose to leave the city to get away. This decision necessitates advance planning and substantial sums of money. For those who can not leave Sderot for various reasons, there are few options left for family entertainment.
Small pleasures turn into worrysome situations in Sderot. Every outdoor activity has to be planned in advance according to the location of the shelters nearby. This situation puts many families into this strange reality where every trip to the neighborhood playground raises dilemmas. Even when going outside to play in daylight hours, the worry that there might be a terror attack exists and doesn’t let up for a second.
This year, the children of Sderot can also play without worries!
The Committee for a Secure Sderot, under the leadership of Alon Davidi, is building a new sheltered Gymboree in the site of the ‘Shefa Shuk’ Supermarket. The Gymboree contains a playground and activity center with equipment, a pool of balls, Omega, mazes, a special pre-school activity center, sitting area for parents, tightrope, air-hockey and football tables, birthday parties and more….
The Gymboree will open in a few weeks and will be warmly received by the residents of Sderot and the surrounding area who will benefit from special discounts.
This project costs over $200,000 and many people have worked hard to make it happen so the children of Sderot will benefit. In addition to a generous donation from the United States, private individuals have contributed to the project. People from all over Israel and the world were excited to take part in this project that was initiated by the Committee for a Secure Sderot and showed interest in supporting and helping the people of Sderot. Young and old people alike contributed to this project. For example, students from the center of the country, together with the Committee for a Secure Sderot, held a song festival where all of the profits were donated to this project. The staff of the Committee for a Secure Sderot held many fundraising activities for this project. Every day they held meetings, recruited volunteers, edited materials and held events with one goal in mind: Establishing a sheltered Fymboree for the children of Sderot.
The Committee for a Secure Sderot works for Sderot with the goal of shifting the current reality. We hope that the establishment of a safe, secure sheltered place of entertainment for children will enable families to enjoy being together in a fun, calm and relaxed atmosphere.
