A touching story, written by Dorit, mother of four girls from Kibbutz Nir Am, who has to deal with the fear & threat of Kassams every morning anew.
Girls, I want only the best for you. I`m sorry that there are other things that are happening in your world, I have no way of stopping them. I have no influence over them, but still, I am your mother & I want to protect your small world as much as I can.
My tears choked me when, Amit & Inbal, you threw your heavy satchel onto the grass & released from the heavy burden, ran for your lives to a sheltered area, when you heard "Color Red ". Before it, there was the sound of the rocket firing, & you, Amit, asked "Mother, what`s that?" I answered "Nothing". It didn`t help because "Colour Red" was heard immediately, breaking into the morning of blue sky & heavy humidity.
They are no longer by my side, I`m behind them now, my stomaching churning, collecting their abandoned satchels, & just before hearing the rocket fall, I managed to reach the shelter where they & many other children are waiting for the school bus. Clutching their satchels, my eyes are searching for Amit & Inbal, Amit`s is surrounded by children & adults, her face pale, her eyes wide open, & her sweet little mouth has also lost its colour.
My heart is breaking & I am trying to be strong, even though I already know this look of hers every time the siren is sounded. I am familiar with it, but cannot get used to it, I am not prepared to let it disturb her world. It is to understand that every time it happens, your daughter`s little soul is beaten.
I beg your forgiveness, my dear girls from youngest to oldest (Amit 6,
Inbal 10, Eden 13, Einav 15), I did not mean this to happen, it is not in my hands to stop it, I can only promise you my love, which you know is huge.
I don`t know where you learned to run for lives like that, to throw anything you are carrying that might limit you, I don`t remember giving you any lessons in this. Without thinking twice, Amit (6) threw her favourite Dora satchel down, and, with Inbal (10) following close behind, they simply ran. Which mother in the world would want to start the blue-coloured morning like this?
